5 Ways to Spend the End of Summer in Tallahassee

By Sarah Christine Davis on August 12, 2015

As summer 2015 draws to a close (why do all good things have to come to an end?) many FSU students are fleeing Tallahassee. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to spend time with loved ones who live back home. Some of us are even lucky enough to spend time vacationing around the country before school takes over again. However, some of us are stuck here in Tally, whether it’s for work or other reasons that unfortunately must be prioritized over pleasures. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing, though! There are plenty of events going on in Tallahassee over the next few weeks and places that you could go at any time to keep you from feeling bored out of your mind as you watch Netflix in bed all day (there’s certainly no shame in doing that, but I can say from experience that it gets old fast). If you’re going to be in Tallahassee at all before classes start up again, check out some ways to spend your time below!

1. Wakulla Manatee Observation Eco-Adventure Tour

When: Saturday, August 15 at 9 AM

Where: The Wildnerness Way (6527 Coastal Highway, Crawfordville, FL)

At this family friendly event just outside of Tallahassee, participants will paddle downstream for 3 miles on the beautiful Wakulla River in search of manatees.  This mini trip costs $47 per participant, but the chance to see stunning animals such as osprey, turtles, and manatees in their natural habitat makes the price well worth it. Participants will meet at T-n-T Hide-Away, which is located near the Wakulla River and Highway 98 at the address listed above. Keep in mind that spaces must be booked at least 24 hours in advance. More information can be found here.

2. The Tallahassee Beer Mile

When: Saturday, August 22 at 6 PM

Where: Madison Social (705 S Woodward Avenue Suite 101)

The first annual Tallahassee Beer Mile involves walking and/or running a mile throughout College Town while consuming beer at four different locations: Proof Brewing Company, GrassLands Brewing Company, The Brass Tap, and finally, Madison Social. The point is to drink one 12 ounce beer at each location. While many will be tempted to walk while consuming 48 ounces of beer, there are prizes for the male and female who come in first place. You can register for the event here for just $20, which also includes all one 12 ounce beer at each location. You must arrive at Proof no later than 5:30 PM on August 22 in order to participate. For more information, click here, and best of luck if you choose to participate!

3. Purple Willie Jam

When: Saturday, August 22 at 7 PM

Where: The Junction at Monroe (2011 South Monroe Street)

Come out and support the Tallahassee Walk to End Alzheimer’s at this showcase of local bands. Created in memory of the late Alzheimer’s patient LeMoine C. “Willie” Wheeler, the purpose of Purple Willie Jam is to showcase local bands, celebrate The Junction for donating their facility for the night, and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. 4. Tallahassee Downtown Market

When: Saturdays from 9 AM – 2 PM

Where: 115 East Park Avenue

End the summer feeling fresh and healthy with some homegrown and organic items from Tallahassee’s impressive farmer’s market. If you can get yourself over there by 9 o’clock, you will be greeted with the harmonious sound of bagpipes ringing throughout downtown Tallahassee for what is called the Mercat March. From artists to food vendors to musicians, the Tallahassee Downtown Market offers fantastic niceties that make it a great place to spend your Saturday morning. It’s even been called a must-see stop by Visit Florida! For more information on the market, click here.

5. The J.R. Alford Greenway

Whether you’re a hiker, a bicyclist, an equestrian, or someone who wants to get out and enjoy the outdoors, J.R. Alford Greenway is a great place to spend a couple of hours – just make sure to bring some sunscreen! The Greenway includes many different landscapes, from hardwoods to a freshwater swamp. It’s a spot on the Great Florida Birding Trail, and it also includes several other multi-use trails. You can also bring your dog to this beautiful 800-acre landscape of trails and open space. Only about 20 minutes away from FSU, The J.R. Alford Greenway is the ideal place to go if you want to embrace a rural setting. Additionally, if you’re looking for a place to stargaze, this is the ideal place to do it!
