Summer is just around the corner! Can you feel those rays of sunshine calling out to you? I sure can. Or maybe it’s the senioritis getting to my head.

Getting back on topic, the approach of summer means that right now is the prime time to start looking into a summer job that will help you score some extra cash. Here are some places that you should be looking.

Babysitting Jobs

For me, this is a go-to for many reasons. For one, you basically get to make your own hours. If a parent asks you to work on a Friday, and you don’t want to work that Friday, then guess what? You have the day off! It’s that simple. You can either lay out certain days that you are willing to work, or if you don’t have much going on, you can tell the parent to text or call whenever they need you and you can let them know if that would work for you or not.

Another great thing about babysitting is that you get the money that night, and you get the full amount of what you worked for. You also get to set your rate, so you can decide (depending on your experience) how much you want to charge.

I also find babysitting to be a lot of fun, since you get to play with and observe tiny humans all day. It satisfies my itch to have a child for the moment, and I get to enjoy them for the day and then give them back if/when they get fussy.

If you build up relationships with the parents and the kids, chances are they will ask you back for other breaks through the year, and may even recommend you to their friends!

Retail

Retail is one of those jobs that is like a right of passage in life. You learn a lot while you are working retail over summer, like how people are crazy and how to cope with odd working hours, but you can usually score a good amount of summer savings from it. While most retail jobs only make minimum wage, most if not all give you around a 30 percent discount on all of their merch. This will save you a lot of money in the long run because then you can buy your back-to-school clothes with your discount! Since you’ll be handling and working with the clothes constantly, you can keep an eye out for things you like that you can try on during your break or after you get off. Use all your discounts to your advantage while you have them.

Pet Sitting

If you aren’t planning on going anywhere over the summer, why not offer to pet sit? So many people have a hard time planning vacations because they don’t have anyone to watch their pet. The perks: you get to play with an animal all day, some people want you to sleep at their place and will stock the fridge for you so you’ll get free snackies, and you get to set your rate. It’s a pretty easy and fun job. Start promoting your services early around your neighborhood so people will keep you in mind as they plan their trips.

Starbucks

Because who doesn’t love coffee? At Starbucks, each employee gets a free drink at the beginning of their shift, and discounts when they are off the clock! There are also opportunities to get funding for school, which you can look into on their webpage, and they make it pretty easy to transfer to a different Starbucks location. This way, you can start the job in the summer, and can easily transfer to the one by your college during the school year if you have time, or have an easier time getting rehired the following summer. The fast paced environment will also be great on your resume, so you’ll be making money, friends, racking in the rewards, and gaining an experience that will last you a lifetime.

Tutors

If you enjoy teaching kids and teens, why not offer some tutoring services to your local neighborhood? You will be able to pick the times and the rates as well as the subjects that you feel most comfortable in. This is a great way to make some extra money since you would still have time for a part-time job elsewhere, and you’d be building your resume at the same time! If you would like some more structure to your sessions, why not check to see if your local high school or community college is in need of a tutor?

These are just a few ways to make some extra cash this summer. Don’t go spending it all in one place, and remember, you can squeeze something good out of any job to make it shine on your resume and get you where you need to go.
