Summer Fashions that Will and Won't make it to Fall

By Janelle Sanchez on July 25, 2012

There are many benefits to compulsive shopping.  The refreshing scent of never worn fabrics, the thrill of finding a great deal, and the sheer joy of wearing a brand new outfit for the first time all make having a perpetually empty wallet fully worthwhile. However, there is nothing more frustrating than to buy a piece because it is in style simply to find that a month later it is no longer vogue.  To avoid this mishap, I have created a guide for summer shopping so that new clothes do not get instantly sent to Plato’s at the first sign of a crisp Autumn day (which is fast approaching).

You Will Get Your Money’s Worth on:

1. Pastel Skinny Jeans are more versatile than neon because you can wear them to the workplace or at a bar, during a day or at night with an almost seamless transition.  Their candy colors are alternatively sweet and sexy, and -unlike neon- they look great on all skin types, fair included.  Pair these with some edgy boots, a sheer blouse and a blazer and you are golden for any weather.

2. Bright Colored Tops are extremely functional and great for fall.  Many fashionistas enjoy adding accessories to a simple outfit.  My personal style is to allow the clothing to speak for itself, which is why I love pieces that make a statement such as the orange shirt above, which obviously does not need accessories (I love the golden buttons on the sleeves!). Again, classy enough for work or the classroom and chic enough for the town.

3. Shirts With Unique Backs are always go tos’ for a sexy night, however this year they are stocking the shelves, and no wonder!  A sleek back is beautiful on a woman, and, unlike showing extra cleavage or belly, showing some spine will never place you in the trashy category (unless there is some intense side boobage, don’t do that to yourself). This style will be gorgeous come August, plain and simple. (It may be a little breezy though, but there are some long sleeve styles that, when paired with boots and skinnies- will be simply beautiful for the cooler days).

4. Sheer Fabrics, when done right, are elegance in a bag.  Couple with a tank top that is the same or of a nude color, or with a  bandeau for a sleek, gorgeous look.  Definitely a great buy for the hot days of summer, and a great staple for an Autumn wardrobe.

5. Bandeaus have been around for a while now, starting with bathing suits and moving on up to being considered a top in and of itself.  I wouldn’t go that far.  However, paring a lacey or colorful bandeau with a loose tank or a sheer top is a great way to create cool layers without layering on the fabrics.  When paired with high waisted shorts, it shows less skin but has twice the impact.  I think we will continue to see this trend under blazers as fall approaches.

Don’t Waste Your Money on:

1. Crop tops- Lets face it, they are great for the pool and the beach- but they honestly will not get much wear elsewhere.  They usually have a hem that lands just below your belly button, showcasing the most unsightly part of anyone’s body.  The loose-ness around the shoulders and bust creates a top heavy look that is exaggerated if you wear anything bigger than an a- cup.  All in all, buy just one for the summer, and spend the rest of your money on sheer tops with awesome back cut outs.

2. Cheap Strapless Bathing Suits- They do nothing for your boobs.  If you want a strapless bathing suit in order to avoid tan lines, save your money and invest in one that is more expensive but provides adequate support.

3. Neon Jeans-  Now, I proceed with caution here.  I placed neon skinnies in this category for two reasons. A) They do not look good on every skin tone (the neon favors tan or dark skin). And B) They are really not appropriate for work.  However, if you are naturally blessed with darker skin and can pull these off, more power to you.  One last note: these draw ALOT of attention downward, so if you have an hourglass shape ( otherwise, if you have feminine hips of any shape) these may not be the color for you.

4. Leggings- These went out of style at least a year ago, please stop trying to bring them back.

5. Cut out Maxi Skirts- I couldn’t believe it when I saw it, maxi skirts that showcase long sheer fabric surrounding a short dark fabric.  What could possibly be the use?  They are not appropriate for work, too much for class, and not exactly cute for a night on the town.  I have yet to see someone pull this look off.  To prove my point, see below. (*Note- I do like the dress version, but I still wouldn’t buy it).  Unfortunately, this is definitely Fad status.
